Friday Free-for-All: National Dog Day

2 Sep

Dixie, my weimaraner ...

Last Friday was National Dog Day. While I am a little late in posting about it, it’s too good of a cause not to mention. In the words of the day’s official website, National Dog Day helps “galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

So take a few minutes today to give your pup a little love. Fluffy and Fido don’t need fancy gadgets and apparel. The best gift you can give your dog is time; a little exercise, some training, some game-playing or a good old-fashioned belly rub would all do the trick.

And if you’re considering adding a dog to your life make sure you educate yourself about responsible, ethical ways to adopt and avoid sources that perpetuate cruelty.

I will definitely be celebrating National Dog Day with my pack. They may be a lot of responsibility some days, but life without dogs would be a lot less rich and definitely a lot less laughter.

Readers, how do you celebrate special days with your pups? What’s your favorite thing about being a dog owner?
