The Winter Park Road Race has been a Central Florida runner’s favorite for 35 years, and it’s easy to see why. The race features a shaded, scenic course, three distance options and a fun location for post-race socializing. Back on March 24, I had a chance to run the 10K for the second time, and it was a great day and a new personal record (PR) for me. For more about the race and how I trained for my PR, read on.
If you ask most runners about their favorite time of year to run, few would mention summer. Whether its the heat, the humidity, the lack of races (especially longer distances) or all the schedule disruptions from vacations and holidays, summer is a time of year when even the most dedicated runner’s willpower melts like ice cream in the sun.
I did it! I am now officially a half-marathoner! I completed the OUC Half-Marathon in downtown Orlando on Dec. 3.
As you may remember, it was my first half-marathon and I had no time goal. I would have been happy to stumble across the finish line in any shape, but I totally surpassed my own expectations and finished–feeling strong and smiling!–at a time of two hours, 13 minutes and 56 seconds. That’s a 10 minute and 13 second mile, or just a little slower than my old 5K pace! Below are my impressions of the race itself, as well as my personal half-marathon experience.
I am training for my first half-marathon in December, but in between all the must-do training runs, I think it’s nice to do a race that’s just for fun now and then. The Parenting Magazine Fit Generation 5K and Stroller Roll on Oct. 1 fit the bill perfectly. The event featured a chip-timed 5K, an untimed 5K stroller roll, kids races and a family festival after the race. The starting and finish line and the festival were hosted at the Winter Park Village shopping center in Winter Park, Fla.

I try to write a little bit about most of the things I enjoy on the blog, but one topic has been missing until now: running. Now that race season has started in Central Florida, I’ll try to include some race recaps on the blog and, at some point, I’ll try to share a little bit more about my fitness journey for those who may be curious. But for now, on to the recap…
Miracle Miles 15K
Miracle Miles was my first 15K. I ran the corresponding 5K a couple years ago, but the 15K (9.3 miles) is a personal distance record and, hopefully, a stepping stone to build up my endurance (and confidence) to run my first half-marathon (13.1 miles) in December.
